Canadian energy expert: Pickens blowing smoke
Wednesday, October 15, 2008
Medill Reports - Chicago -- T. Boone Pickens’ plan to move the United States away from oil and toward natural gas and wind power may sound like a compelling idea on the surface, but environmental experts say a closer look may reveal his ideas as all hat and no cattle.

“Well, he’s got it half right,” said Anthony Perl, a Vancouver, B. C., author and professor of urban studies. “We’re going to have a lot of need for that natural gas he wants to sell us .… We’re going to have a better use than putting it into SUVs.”

Josh Mogerman, of the Natural Resources Defense Council in Chicago, agreed. "We feel that natural gas should be used for electricity production, not for use in cars. … We’d rather see these [cars] plugging into an electrical grid.”

I really believe, that right now there are many different ideas on alternative forms of energy. Until all is tested, we must wait

C4U is right. We had the entire eastern sea board blow out a few years back because of faulty old equipment. And you can bet the farm if we went to electric cars the same would happen again but worse. And then we'd really be in the dark. It isn't cost efficient for electric companies to fix this stuff yet. Just keep patchin' it.

Money and greed seem to be the incentive here, not independence from oil..........

We need to change the way we do things with energy to get away from oil. Although we need to watch out for the electrical grid as the demand increases so will electrical costs per KWH, will definitely go up.

Here's the question we all know the electrical grid is outdated and in need of improvement. Soon we will increase our need and demand from the grid, so why hasn't the power companies started in invest there profits today so we will be ready when the real demand hits.

Simple they will wait until the demand is here, cry wolf the government will give huge tax breaks and incentives to upgrade and at the same time they will upgrade our cost.

Why do we need the canadians to tell us what not to do in the US? Keep your opinions up North!

pickens has clearly stated his solution is temporary until we can fully develop alternatives, some just like to complain without offering another alternative.

The Candian's are saying that becuse they sell more reg. gas then natural gas to the U.S.A and it'll hurt their sales.

Electric cars are better but , WHERE are they ?
GM and Ford killed those in California in 2002.
AND Try driving one across the country . HA !
Natural gas is the way to go for the interim until electric is perfected.
I have been driving CNG fuelled vehicles for 3 years and they are great!
If you are in Utah, you get a $3000 tax rebate and 85 cents/gal fuel.
THAT is what we need!

so Perl wants to use the gas to make electricity to sell to the owners of the cars that could have been using the natural gas to run them in the first place? Sounds like a middleman somewhere will be making money...

Pickens didn't invest all that money on commercials if he didn't think it would line his pockets with cash.

Using natural gas in a vehicle is probably better than continuing to use gasoline, though I do agree that it might be better used elsewhere...

Remember when natural gas was just burned off as a "useless by-product"? If you are even older, you may remember when cities were heated with coking gas...

I'm still liking MDI's compressed air car - 1000 miles on 8 gallons of gasoline at 80 mph

Rahm Emanual is a crook! I wonder how much money he got from Pickens to endorse his "plan". Emanual is one of Obama's buddy's. They have been ripping off Chicago's and Illinois taxpayers for years!

At least Pickens has a complete, coherent problem

Certainly some will have different ideas but I haven't seen any of these other 'experts' come out with an alternative plan

Only the pure electric cars will be better. An electric car with a 40% gas reserve defeats the purpose.

Funny thing ... I have never trusted anything an "environmentalist" has said. Most of the time, in my opinion, they don't even get "... it half right ...".

I agree zivcam. Use every way possible way to get us through.I think 50 years from now things could get real ugly if we don't move fast now.

We are moving toward a more diverse fuel country.Meaning we will be using many different types of fuel in the near future.Pickens just wants his share of it,that`s all.

T. Boone seems to be confusing some of the folks that don't know squat about oil and gas production. Ol' Perl, an "author and professor of urban studies" certainly would know a lot about oil and gas??!! Yeah, sure, and I have a bridge over the river I want to sell ya!

Pundits with point to sell. They only want to change public option for a profit, they are worthless mouth breathers. Yes, you use natural gas for electricity and your home heating cost will triple, you won't be able to heat your house.

How long does he fugure natural gas will last and them your're back to a crisis again. Solar and wind power to make electricity is the way to go. The sun isn't going away.

Just because the guy can make a profit in the process doesn't make his plan a bad one.

On the other hand I don't really think the "transition" via natural gas is smart from the consumer's standpoint. I say make the jump straight to hydrogen fuel-cell technology. Right now it is still pricy and needs some refinement, but that is always the case with new technology. The internet itself would not exsist without all the early adopters who spent $300 for a 1200 buad modem.

to use natural gas for either motor fuel or the electric grid are both nuts. clean coal and nuclear are better suited for the electric grid; and natural gas for home heating.
hybrid cars with clean diesels could sip petroresources from off shore and ANWR and Canadian oil sands.

Who you gonna believe? A guy who spends his time promoting socialism and feeding at the public trough, or a guy who's spent his life bringing energy to the consumer and in the process made a buncha bucks?

We need "all the above" and not just "pump up your tires." Support the Pickens Plan and support an Energy Independent America.

Don't let your representatives get away with turning a deaf ear to you.
