I've never understood why some cars seem to not take a full tank of fuel as well as others. A few folks on here have mentioned that, and my father's Focus is another one. From dead empty the pump will shut off with a good two gallons of air space left, and trying to ‘round up’ in a real pain. My old Toyota's owner manual claimed a 10.5 gallon tank and from dead empty it was no trouble to get the 10 gallons in. Maybe it's new vapor recovery tech?

As I've mentioned several times (20 points!) my diesel has no vapor recovery system because diesel vapors are practically nonexistant (or so I have been told). They're certainly not as flammable as petrol fumes! I saw a guy accidentally drop a lit cigarette into a pool of spilled diesel fuel and the fuel put the cigarette out instead of blowing up. Weird.

Anywho I can usually get two+ extra gallons of fuel in by pressing a vent button in the filler neck with the nozzle. It opens a valve and whooosh! out goes the air. I can fill right to the brim without worry. Gets a good extra 90-100 miles on the tank.

If the weather is cold you can do whatever that heck you want. I hot weather is occuring, don't top off unless you're going to use up at least a half gallon before resting the vehicle.

I pump to the next $.50 cent mark so when scanning the bills at the end of the month, I can just glance to make sure I was the one doing so. ($20.50, $21.50 etc)

Overfilling can damage the vapor canister in the vehicle which is an expensive repair item.

The last several vehicles we've owned have low-fuel lights which come on at or below about 3 gallons left.

I wait 'till this light comes on, typically, then fill rounding to the next round dollar amount.

When I had vehicles which were, um, reluctant to take the final few, sometimes several gallons, I'd be patient and come close to topping the tank off.

Used to have an '85 RWD Fleetwood which, when the pump clicked off, still had at least 5, usually 7, gallons of air left. We lived in Oregon at the time, and being you are not allowed to pump your own gasoline, due to UTTER STUPIDITY, then I had to get fuel at least two extra times per month.

Thanks, morons in Oregonion government.

I seldom fill the tank. I know what I can afford & that's how much I pump.
When I do fill the tank, I stop pumping when the pump stops. It is not safe to "top off" the tank.

I try to stuff as much gas as I can in the tank, cuz the gas companies in Canada like to jerk the prices up and down on what seems to be a whim. They (the suppliers) say there is no collusion, but if one raises or lowers prices, the others follow like lemmings. They say it's based on the price of a barrel of oil. Why then does the pump price go up, when crude prices fall?

My Chrysler Sebring has an annoying habit of not taking that last little bit, say, to the nearest dollar. I'm lucky to get to the nearest dime. I usually try to fill up, but when short on cash or at a really high cost station, I'll only put in $20 or so, to get me by. What I really hate is the gas gauge itself; it drops slowly on the top half, then plummets on the bottom half. Why is this?

I like round numbers, if I'm starting a long trip I'll fill as much as I can get in without spilling just to get that extra milage before having to stop for gas.

For those that do the top off (pump until the gas almost spilling out), the new cars are design to spit out the excess gas into ... hmm.. I forgot what that thing called.. anyway, it can damage that device and cost you more money to fix.

Also, there is a sign next to the gas pump telling you not to top off.

So, to save yourself money repairing and to obey the law you should not top off. :)

Hey, I'm new to this site as of today. After the auto shut off, I'll squeeze almost 2 gals additional into my tank (2007 Civic EX). This does two things for me. It allows me to get an accurate fuel fill each time for tracking (each fill is the same), and those two gals, gets me another 80 miles between fills (two each week). Glad I don't fill 3x.

Depends on my method of payment as well. If I am pre-paying, obviously I pay a rounded amount. Or if I am paying with cash afterwards. However, using the debit or credit card at the pump, what's the point in rounding? I fill it till it stops then.
